Tencups' Birthday Surprise

  • May. 16th, 2009 at 11:31 AM
Sheepish

Hi, everyone!

Some of you have heard of this already, so a brief explanation. For my little sister [info]tencups_i_swear 's birthday the other day (ahem. Happy Birthday, tencups!) I gave her copies of our favourite books, The Thief and The Queen of Attolia. Before I sent them, I printed off some chapter headings kindly translated from the Japanese edition of these books by [info]ninedaysaqueen , and illustrated each heading with a scene from the chapter, and slotted them and some other surprises between the pages.

Those of you who know tencups know that she's a MUCH better artist than I, so my efforts aren't anyway near such entertaining caricatures of the characters as hers are (try http://goat-foot-baa.deviantart.com/gallery/#Queens-Thief ) but here they are!

Tons of thanks (and international cookies) to everyone who contributed to the present, and also to the people whose work I used without warning them, namely [info]peggy_2 (for the original Japanese photos) and [info]ninedaysaqueen . Also, thanks to thelasteddis for her very helpful feedback on the pictures. She'll have noticed that I didn't take her advice, for which I can only defend myself by saying that I ran out of time, and ink drawings unfortunately don't lend themselves to much last-minute revision. But it was very much appreciated :D

Also, I *am* aware that I spelt 'thief' wonky. Mea Culpa!

Have I mentioned lately that I love the present?
That I recieved it and then spent the next ten minutes saying squeekily,
"I'm so happy, I'm so happy, I'm so happy" over and over again?
Mum was very amused.

Yup, I do recall you mentioning something of the sort XD

Well done! I don't know why you said you didn't like the TT ones - I love them. Very awesome!

Don't you always wish there was a way to erase pen? my pencil drawings never last, and they smear, but if I make a mistake in the pen ones (which is frequent and often catastrophic), there's NOTHING I CAN DO. I guess my favorite medium is paint, because I can paint over things. And you can use glazes. I LOVE glazes.

Aw, thanks, TLE! The Thief pictures were such a rush job, that's why I don't like them as much.

Don't you always wish there was a way to erase pen? Oh gawsh YES. I *always* draw in either ink or plain ballpoint (as you can see, my arty pretensions don't extend very far) and I either rush along and screw things up immensely, or proceed at a snail's pace for fear one careless stroke will ruin my masterpiece. I envy your paint-skills!

OIL PAINTS FTW! I rarely draw in pencil because of the smudginess. Pen is much better.

Very nice pictures, by the way! :D

Rosie, just out of interest, didn't you precipitate some kind of artist-war on Chatzy between oils, acrylics, and ...dactylic? :P

A million years ago when Dad attempted to teach me to draw, I had to use charcoal and pencil. *shudders* Pen is much better.

Thank you!

I haven't tried oils yet, I'm still honing my very basic acrylics skillz. But my art teacher uses oils, and her paintings are absolutely beautiful - so at some point I'll have to give them a try. I worship this art teacher.
FUDGE BROWNIE YOU ARE MY HERO EVEN THOUGH YOU WILL NEVER READ THIS.

...That is AWESOME.

Also, yay for commenting at exactly the same moment as me!

Yes, I do call my teacher fudge brownie. It makes sense if you're in my art class... see, we were on this field trip, and we hadn't had lunch yet, and we were really hungry. So this one guy says, "hey, your name sounds like fudge brownie!!" and I thought that was awesome, so I started calling her fudge brownie.

Ooh, don't. I'm starving, but the slavering hordes with essays due will snap up my computer if I stir from this spot.

Caramel sauce!

Currently, I'm on a huge meat-pie rampage. I REALLY want a meat pie. Like, a pork one or a steak and onion one, with some of that weird fruit stuff they serve with it at this one restaurant... Or with some english cheese... OR WITH BOTH...

(btw, I'm replying to your email. It will be there... soonish. Maybe.)

ARGH.
SHUT UP.
I should have known we would get to this point and stopped opening the comment alert emails. My growling abdomen is starting to alarm the guy next to me (whose massive piles of highlighted notes are overflowing onto my desk, by the way) and that is YOUR FAULT.
I have a single, solitary feijoa, but I forgot to bring a spoon. Life is cruel.

(Hee, which email?)

*will not snap anymore*
*would like to apologise*

Please come out of the corner. I promise not to bite your head off.

Oh, and don't worry about emailing me pronto - I know you're busy!

*creeps out of corner*

I'll get the email finished soon! soon-ish. It's a long email.

I'm afraid I can't see them very well. But what I can see looks great! What a good idea for a very personalized present. I wish I had the imagination to think of brilliant presents like this. Good job!

Hey, TG! Thank you for your help and feedback!
I'm sorry the pictures are so tiny - I still haven't worked out how to make them larger on the LJ page. But by clicking and then clicking again, you'll be taken to enlargements, if you want to see the details.
